His new power trio, The Southerners brings together award winning (AMA UK’s Instrumentalist of the Year 2018) multi instrumentalist Tom Collison on keys and bass guitar, and guitar maestro Jim Maving (Case Hardin, Don Gallardo). Armed with a searingly soulful voice, skilfully crafted songs and earworm melodies, Dean’s music combines the unfettered enthusiasm of a rock n roller with the sympathetic delivery of folk’s best storytellers, drawing on an 8 album solo career.
Dean’s started 2020 with showcases at Folk Alliance and AmericanaFest UK, a songwriting residency at House of Songs (Arkansas) and recording his new album with desert noir icons Calexico in Tucson (released in 2021).
A “Best of” album – The Man From Leith – was released in March, with a two month UK tour (and a month in USA) – including Scarborough’s Top Secret Blues Festival, Orkney Folk Festival and Maverick Festival - scheduled before the pandemic kicked in. These will be rescheduled, and meanwhile he is buzzing with new songs, recording remotely with The Southerners, and developing online concerts.
