Australia’s very own Warwick Thistle Pipe Band make it all the way across the globe to Buchanan Street in Glasgow to march and perform for an encapsulated Piping Live! and World Pipe Band Championships audience in the heart of Scotland. TRADtv had the pleasure of catching up with some key members of the band after filming them in performance as part of the city’s annual celebration of bagpiping in all it’s forms.
Warwick Thistle Pipe Band, one of the Southern Downs’ most cherished community groups, has recently completed its centenary year, proudly marking 100 years since it was founded in 1923. From humble beginnings as a country band made up of returned servicemen, it has grown into a thriving intergenerational group of musicians aged from just 8 to nearly 90, with entire families playing side by side. Members have been working towards taking Warwick Thistle on its first overseas tour as a celebration of achieving its centenary, something that couldn’t have been contemplated at its inception over a 100 years ago.
The band is deeply committed to nurturing young talent, running weekly learner sessions and competing in Grade 4B competitions. Several of its musical leaders regularly travel two hours each way after work to Brisbane to rehearse with higher-grade bands, demonstrating the dedication that drives the band’s development.
