In collaboration with TRADtv, the @MaketCollective hosted their first piping Recital Series at the @nationalpipingcentre in April 2026, supported by the William Grant Foundation. The recital featured 5 incredible female pipers, had a live audience and was hosted by Hannah Rarity, a leading figure in the Scottish folk scene, celebrated for her exceptional voice & dynamic musical presence.
Anna Kummerlöw is a leading piper from Hamburg. She was raised by Germany’s first piping family and taught by her father, Joachim Kummerlöw from a young age. Now a student of Callum Beaumont, she regularly competes in Scotland and has achieved major success, including winning the Gold Medal at the Braemar Gathering (2017) and placing second in the Silver Medal at Inverness (2023). She is also among the few women to have competed at both the Argyllshire Gathering and the Northern Meeting.
Alongside her solo career, Anna serves as Pipe Major of multiple bands, performing with the German Thistle Pipes and Drums, and recently joining St Laurence O’Toole Pipe Band. A former president of the Bagpipe Association of Germany and a regular adjudicator, she is a key figure in the development and promotion of piping in Germany.
Here Anna chats to event host Hannah Rarity about her origins in piping and the progress of her career so far.
